Choosing the right castor comes down to six key features: load capacity, fitting type, wheel material, bearings, castor type, and the environment it will work in. Here's what to check — and if you'd rather talk it through, our team helps customers find the right products every day.
Add up the weight of the equipment plus its maximum load, then divide by three — on uneven floors, only three castors may carry the load at any moment. Each castor's rated capacity should meet or exceed that figure. When handling heavy loads, always size up: an overloaded castor wears quickly and can fail without warning, so a margin of strength is essential for safety and productivity.
Top plate castors bolt through four fixing holes and suit flat-bottomed equipment like trolleys and cabinets. As a rule of thumb, industrial castors up to 125mm use rectangular top plates with standard 80 × 60 slotted bolt hole centres, while 160mm and 200mm castors step up to larger plates with 105 × 80 centres — so replacements can usually be fitted without drilling new holes. Bolt hole castors fix through a single central hole (typically M10 or M12), ideal for tubular frames, and can be supplied with solid stems or round and square expanding adaptors. Note that fixed castors are only available in plate fitting — a bolt hole fixing would simply allow the castor to spin.
The wheel material determines how your castor performs on different floors:
Bearings affect how easily a loaded castor rolls. Plain bearings run directly on the wheel centre — simple, robust and the most popular choice. Roller bearings reduce rolling resistance under heavy loads, while ball bearings give the easiest, smoothest movement of all — worth specifying wherever equipment is moved frequently or pushed by hand.
Swivel castors rotate 360° for excellent manoeuvrability; fixed castors track in a straight line for control — most trolleys use two of each. Add braked castors wherever equipment must stay put: wheel-only brakes stop the wheel, while combined swivel and wheel brakes (SWB) lock the whole castor head for maximum stability. Directional locks are also available, converting a swivel castor into a fixed one at the flick of a lever.
Match the wheel to its surroundings: soft treads protect hard floors, hard wheels roll more easily on soft or uneven surfaces. For washdown areas or exposure to chemicals, choose stainless steel components; for outdoor use, pneumatic or puncture proof wheels handle rough conditions best; and for operating theatres and sensitive electronics, antistatic wheels are recommended.

Castor sizes refer to the wheel diameter, not the overall height — so a 100mm castor will actually stand around 127–130mm tall overall. This is standard throughout the trade, but it catches people out, so always check which measurement you're working from when you replace a castor.
A wheel is just the rolling component; a castor is the complete assembly — wheel, bracket and fitting — that mechanisms attach to. We sell complete castors and replacement wheels to fit existing brackets.
Divide the total loaded weight of your equipment by three and choose castors rated at or above that figure. It's an important safety margin — getting it wrong means premature wear at best, and sudden failure at worst. If in doubt, our team will recommend the right specification.
For most users, yes. Puncture proof wheels give a similar cushioned ride with zero maintenance and no flats, and last far longer in environments with sharp debris. Pneumatic wheels still have the edge on very rough terrain where maximum shock absorption matters.
